Purchasing a charm bracelet for a granddaughter or goddaughter is the perfect way to ensure there is a great gift idea for any holiday.

Grandparents and godparents want special gifts for the little girls in their lives, but it can be hard to select an affordable gift that will have meaning for a long time. Buying a charm bracelet and adding charms is a great way to never be without a gift idea for a granddaughter or goddaughter again.

Start with a Sterling Silver Bracelet

When selecting a charm bracelet for a little girl, it is best to begin with sterling silver for many reasons. Sterling silver is almost always more affordable than gold. It is also a sturdier metal and can take a bit more abuse from children or adults. Starting with sterling silver also allows the grandparent or godparent to upgrade to a gold bracelet with the child is old enough for such a gift.

Choose a Style for the Charm Bracelet

Although it can be a great idea to start a charm bracelet when the child is born or baptized, grandparents who don’t can always start one later. The age of the girl and whether she will wear the bracelet at a young age will help determine the bracelet style. Some charm bracelets are expandable and can be adjusted for a child’s wrist. Others are a standard 7 inches. If possible, discuss with the girl’s parents whether they will want her to wear the bracelet now or when she grows. All charm bracelets should be made up of links or rings to attach multiple charms.

Make the Gift for Granddaughters Special

Choosing the charm bracelet and the first charm are the most expensive part of the process. After the first year, it is easy to find a variety of inexpensive sterling silver charms. There are many good ideas for a first charm. A round disk with the child’s name and birthday engraved can work for girls of all ages. Godparents may choose a round disk with the date of baptism, confirmation or first communion. Engraving can be pricey so be sure to ask for the cost when choosing the charm. Initials can be a less expensive choice because they do not require any engraving. Initials are a great starter charm, especially for infants.

Annual Gift for Granddaughters

After the first purchase, it gets easier to know what to choose. There are so many choices for charms that cover a wide range of ages and interests. Charms of teddy bears, blocks and other toys work for infants and young girls. Other choices are school-theme charms like pencils or school houses, holiday charms like bells or candy canes, sports balls or jersey numbers and hobbies like horses or sewing. As the bracelet grows, it will reflect the growing interests of the girl who wears it.

The Charm Bracelet Grows With the Girl

With an annual gift like charms for the charm bracelet, it is important to plan ahead. Some charms may require special order and engraving can take time. Keep track of the charms given on a list in a planner or address book. It is also important not to have the charms soldered to the bracelet at first. Use the jump rings that come with the charms or purchase split rings. Using split rings is the best option until the bracelet is complete or the order of charms is established. Split rings work like the rings that hold keys on keychains. These rings can also be presented as a little “add-on” gift to the charm bracelet as the collection grows.

A charm bracelet is a great gift for granddaughters or goddaughters. The possibilities are endless for creating a bracelet that is a unique reflection of the girl who wears it. For more gift ideas, read Buy Traditional First Communion Gifts or First Communion Gifts Don't Have To Be Religious.
